August 6 Update
Please read the July 30th update below.
In addition, several issues have been raised to the attention of the Nominations and Election Committee. Decisions by that committee on those issues so far have not negatively impacted the Team for Progress slate of candidates. At this point I am not sure why, so I can only hope that in the end the committee will oversee a fair election. Biggest concern is how the committee changed their position on the unauthorized robocall made by Teresa Politano (The one in which she gave false and misleading information). The committee initially indicated that it was a clear violation and then later after consulting with Patrick Nowlan and Ira Mintz decided to take no position on the robocall. No reason was given for the change in position This was a very interesting development with possible further repercussions given some of the documented historical background. More to follow.
For now, the individuals challenging the Team for Progress candidates will have to accept the obstacles placed before them by the committee’s rulings and lack of ruling and continue to see if taking the high road will result in victory. Me I’ve been on the high road and found that taking the high road doesn’t always work when in a highly political situation, especially when lots of money is involved. I’ve tried to share the facts the way that I know them (read below). There is still more coming, but today I was told that additional financial data won’t be available until after the election closes. Too bad! Thousands more dollars that you should know how they were spent.
Appreciate all of you who have contacted me. If there are others who would like to be contacted in the coming weeks including after the election, just send me your name and email address and I will add them to my growing contact list. Email me at email@example.com
Oh, and if you haven’t voted, please vote now. Thanks.
July 30 Update
Dear Rutgers PTLs,
My name is Paul More and I’d love to begin by telling you why you should vote for Team for Progress slate in the currently running PTL Executive Board Election. I still have a few friends on that team. Several others that are on the current Executive Board have raced over to the Faculty for a Democratic Union slate. Others have just given up and resigned, no longer willing to deal with the current Board shenanigans, as one ex-member put it. WHY have so many left? Keep reading to find the answers. Oh yes, there are more than one.
I am running as an independent candidate for Camden Vice President. I do not like political slates, I think in our case it serves to further divide us. Trying to outmaneuver some of the folks challenging them in this election, someone(s) from the current Board decided to band together and run as a Team for Progress slate. I believe it was a small subgroup of present members of the PTL Executive Board that made that decision. What followed was predictable. Naturally the challengers felt like they had to counter with their own slate and named it Faculty for a Democratic Union (FDU for brevity sake). Then the very first day of elections, our current President and leader of Team for Progress (T4P for brevity sake) sent out a robocall, introducing herself as Teresa Politano and then continuing with her message of fear, lies and misinformation. Perhaps you received that call on July 12. When challenged, she claimed to have used no Union resources in making that call. Hmmm, I never gave her my phone number. I wonder how she got it.
As if that wasn't enough, the T4P slate in an email sent to all union members recently continued their campaign in a way reminiscent of what's going on at the national level (dirty politics), ..uuuugggghhhhh!!!! Their email is misleading, in two specific ways. First, it came under the AAUP-AFT’s masthead, implying that the slate has union endorsement. (It does not!). I’m told that this is a clear violation of fair election procedures. Perhaps the Election Committee will do something about this as well as the unauthorized Politano robocall. Please stand by. Second, the subject-line says that Team for Progress would “safeguard your raise,” implying that the other slate and candidates for the E-Board would not do this. (False, ridiculous and a common tactic of dirty politics.)
Let me be clear: The AAUP-AFT has NOT endorsed any candidates or slates in this race and no one running for E-Board, including me is seeking to deny your raise.
Now let me share some insider information. I only know bits and pieces, but I’ll summarize the most important information so that you can make an informed decision when you vote.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE…..READ TODAY
RUTGERS AAUP/AFT PTLs: FOLLOW THE MONEY!!!
Did you know that the current PTL Executive Board recently approved the following…
- Raising the amount that a Board member could claim for work done from $25/hour to $45/hour (an 80% increase)?
It’s true. I put in a trivial claim just to see what would happen and I received a check signed by Teresa Politano, the present Board President, for $45 with no questions asked. In all previous administrations, this claim for work done was very rarely used. Most of us just volunteered our time and work efforts. Most of the Board members who voted for this increase are now running on the Team for Progress slate.
- That certain Board officers will be paid a salary?,
Again something new with the current administration led by Politano. Previously the officers volunteered their time without compensation. I have tried to find out just how much was paid to each present officer over the past year, but my requests have been unanswered. The total amount has been rumored to be above $100,000.
- That the amount deducted from your paycheck for PTL Union dues was raised 250% over the past year.
If you are teaching two classes you will now pay approximately. $300/year instead of $120/year, just so you can continue to pay certain union officers a handsome salary.
These are just a few of the costly actions approved by some of the current Board members, many of whom are now running under the Team for Progress slate. In addition, thousands of dollars were wasted funding a committee on health insurance. What’s that, you still do not see one penny benefit in the new contract for health benefits! Hmmm, oh well some Team for Progress members benefitted at the rate of $45 per hour just for participating on that committee. Wish I knew how much each was paid. Seems that financial information is held close to the vest. Follow the money!
Check out the Executive Board Web Site. Read the minutes of the monthly meetings. See who voted for each of the above costly measures… SORRY, NONE OF THAT INFO IS POSTED FOR YOU TO SEE! The current Politano led Board doesn’t want you to see which members voted for those costly changes in previous policies. I do. You should be able to see how your money is being used and which members of the Board are receiving the largest amounts and why.
If you haven’t voted yet, I need your help now.
You can still vote until August 12. Your vote will make a difference.
I am Paul More and I have served on the Executive Board for over 15 years I am willing to continue to fight for your benefits and against wasteful spending, but I need your help. I cannot do this alone. The Executive Board needs change and voting for the Politano led Team for Progress will not provide the support I need to make the desired changes.
Follow the money! I have seen the changes initiated by the leaders of the current Team for Progress. Most of them have resulted in their own financial progress. It’s time for all of us to find out where and how our money was and is being spent. Please vote for change! It’s not too late. Write to Politano and request to see how your money was spent the last two years.
I am running independently and am tired of trying to get the big spenders of those running under the Team for Progress banner to use our funds wisely. I can see them raising our dues again. Instead of starting a strike fund for all of our benefit, they rewarded a few. Try to find out who benefitted and by how much. Follow the money!
Instead of voting for Team for Progress, Vote for transparency. Vote for honesty and integrity. Vote for Lauren Barbato for President. She has put together an energetic team. Read their statements and decide if any others on her team will help us defeat the big spenders. I have read the statements of the members on Lauren’s team I would be happy to spend the next two years working with them to make the changes needed to put us back on a sound fiscal basis while working for the benefit of all PTLs.
Important note: Some of you may have received a robocall from Teresa Politano, in which she made some false and misleading statements about her opponents. This call was not authorized by the Election Committee and is typical of the type of political dishonesty rampant in our society today. Return Politano’s unauthorized call by voting today.
NOTE: The above message is campaign material. The union has agreed to put out one email message for each slate and each individual not on a slate in the election. This is not an official message from the PTLFC-AAUP-AFT. Please do not respond to this email. Responses to this email will not receive a reply.
