TA-GA Application for Summer 2017 Funding Cycle of the Professional Development Fund

Submitted by Staff on Fri, 03/10/2017 - 12:19

The administration has finally released the Professional Development Fund (PDF) application for the summer 17' funding cycle: TA-GA Application

Fighting for a fairer distribution of PDF has been an arduous task, and graduate student employee union activists are disappointed with the outcome: Once again, the administration has acted directly against the well-being of Rutgers graduate students.

We did succeed, however, in achieving some concessions:

1. The administration has eliminated the rating system for graduate program directors and made departmental approval of the funds dependent on a yes/no question (is the candidate in good academic standing), which aims to increase transparency and make the process less arbitrary;

2. The administration has also agreed to a minimum award of $350 (if any), with a maximum of $1000. It is our hope that this minimum and maximum will help ensure that all who apply receive  money rather than none at all -- as has been the experience of many grads in previous application cycles. In the event that there are students who do not receive any award, they will receive a written statement from the Final Review Committee articulating the reasons for the rejection of their application.

3. For this and all future application cycles for PDF, eligible TAs/GAs include both those on a calendar year and academic year appointment. You are eligible to apply for the fund so long as you were a TA/GA in either this current academic year and/or the 2015-2016 academic year.

This application will be due to the Graduate Program Director by April 3rd and the office of the Graduate Dean by April 10th, 2017

As in previous application cycles, graduate student employees are eligible to request funding for anything that would augment their progress towards a degree, which may include funding for rent and other necessities. We urge as many of you as are eligible to apply for this funding opportunity.

Please do not hesitate to contact Anna Barcy, your union staff-person, at the email address: abarcy@rutgersaaup.org, if you have any questions about this application.

Always contact the union whenever there are issues you would like to bring to your Union's attention!
