Executive Council Resolution: Speaking Up for Freedom of Assembly in Turkey

Submitted by Executive Council on Mon, 11/02/2015 - 16:14

The Executive Council of Rutgers Council of AAUP Chapters, AAUP-AFT, passed unanimously the following resolution on October 13, 2015.

On October 10, 2015, a peace rally in Ankara, Turkey that brought together civil society organizations, unions, and progressive and democratic parties, was the target of a violent attack. One hundred twenty-eight (128) people were killed and hundreds have been injured. This latest attack is part of a series of other such incidents where progressive rallies have been attacked. In Turkey the very act of free assembly and protest is now becoming precarious and dangerous.

We, the Executive Council of Rutgers AAUP-AFT, strongly condemn these attacks and offer solidarity and support to our union sisters and brothers in Turkey. We stand with the people of Turkey and exhort the ruling AKP government to uphold the right to protest in safety and to allow its citizens to exercise their democratic rights.
