Rutgers
Council of AAUP Chapters
American Association of
University Professors - American Federation of Teachers
Resolution passed by the Executive Council of Rutgers
Council of AAUP Chapters, AAUP-AFT on December 13, 2005:
Whereas: Women continue to face potent and persistent barriers to full and
equal inclusion in the economic, political, and social life within this country
and are markedly underrepresented in positions of leadership and
over-represented among the poor.
Whereas: Public institutions of higher education have a unique responsibility
to help prepare historically disadvantaged groups for the challenges they will
face as citizens, workers, and leaders.
Whereas: Douglass College is the only women’s college located within a major
public research university in the United States and is the most recognized,
successful, and enduring sign of our commitment to women’s education.
Be it resolved that the Rutgers Council of AAUP Chapters, AAUP-AFT recognizes
the vital contribution Douglass College has made to higher education and to New
Jersey, and calls on the Administration, Faculty and Students of Rutgers
University to preserve and enhance the institution of Douglass College.
