Why Join the AAUP-AFT?

When you join Rutgers AAUP-AFT, you will have the largest AAUP chapter in this country backing you up if you have any academic or employment problem with the University administration and now, since 2005, you also have the strongest natioanl affiliate working with our local leadership in the American Federation of Teachers. All employees start by paying a representation fee by state law, but for a few dollars more a year in addition to your representation fee, your membership will provide:

  • You with a voice and a vote in all AAUP and AFT matters at Rutgers.

  • You will have the right to vote on the dues structure, to elect representatives and to run as an officer or Executive Council member. Or to become an activist member by volunteering whenever you have time, e.g., advocating for Higher Education in Trenton or in Washington, D.C., or communicating with your colleagues about contract negotiations.

Joining the AAUP-AFT has other implications for you individually and for us collectively as an organization:

  • You will help increase the amount of members we represent. This will solidify our position when we speak to the University administration, State Legislature and other public bodies on academic or labor relations matters on behalf of all constituencies groups that make up our union, full-time faculty members, tenured and tenure track, non-tenure track faculty, graduate employees, EOF Counselors, winter and summer instructors, post-docs, librarians, clinicals, county extension agents and extension specialists, and more.

  • You will show your personal support for a professional organization that is always at your disposal to provide appropriate professional service to back you up when any term or condition of your employment is not respected by the University administration. We also will provide confidential consultation if you are deciding on a your contract with the University or considering retirement. We also offer workshops on promotion and/or tenure procedures or provide guidance to understand and more effectively receive consideration under the enhanced faculty compensation program (EFCP).

  • Additional benefits, beyond those benefits we negotiate in the collective bargaining agreement, become available to you as a full dues-paying member from our two national affiliates, the American Federation of Teachers and the American Association of University Professors.

What are the dues?

The only thing that you have to do to become a member of the Rutgers Council of AAUP Chapters-AFT is to authorize Rutgers to deduct from your paycheck the regular membership dues by filling out the membership form and returning it to our local union office by mail or fax. Dues are 0.75% of salary for FT Faculty (tenure-track and non-tenure track) and EOF Counselors; 0.5% for PTLs; and 0.60% of salary for TA/GAs. The most recently organized group, postdoctoral associates and fellows, are signing membership forms now and will determine their own dues structure within the parameter that is set by the full-time unit.

See the sample calculations in the text below for FT Faculty, or review charts with calculations based on job category:
FT Faculty, PTLs, and TA/GAs.

For FT Faculty Members at 0.75% of your salary, it costs only pennies a day to be a member. (For example a salary base of $ 40,000 X 0.0075 = $ 300.00 per year).

FT Faculty Non-members pay a representation fee which amounts to 85% of dues (0.6375%). (For example on a salary base of $ 40,000 x 0.006375 = $ 255.00 per year for non-members.) To upgrade your status to full member takes only a small investment but it makes possible a strong defense of higher education and employment well-being. An active membership is the true strength of any union.

What are the dues for?

The AAUP-AFT has devoted its energy and resources to secure the gains of the faculty and other academic workers we represent at Rutgers. The Rutgers Chapter devotes over 90% of its resources to collective negotiations, contract administration, grievance representation and obtaining benefits for all constituencies.  It would take too long to give you a complete account of the benefits achieved by the AAUP-AFT Chapter at Rutgers over the years, but you can call us and ask anytime. The following list is a brief look and you can read more about our achievements:

  • AAUP-AFT members were able to improve the salary scale at Rutgers from one of the lowest at a major university in the 1960's to among the highest in the 2000's.

  • The AAUP-AFT obtained TIAA-CREF benefits for the faculty, in place of the less adequate and non-portable public employee pension. If you leave Rutgers and go to another university, you won’t lose your pension and the benefits will keep accumulating.

  • We have negotiated an effective system where faculty personnel grievances, including promotion and tenure problems, are decided by neutral faculty panels rather than by administrators. Teaching Assistants were at the table to negotiate workload protections that we have been able to enforce. Other constituencies are advocating for fairness in their unique working conditions, e.g. non-tenure-track faculty, post-doctoral associates, summer and winter instructors, and EOF Counselors.
