AFT Affiliation Vote Results

Our affiliation with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) was approved by the members, when votes were tallied on Wednesday, May 1, 2008. The vote count was 499 "yes" and 61 "no" with 1 abstention and 1 blank ballot. Click here to read President Lisa Klein's statement in support of continuing our affiliation.

Thanks to the members for participating in this important decision. We will now face the challenges of the future in higher education as a jointly-affiliated union local with the national and state levels of both the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and the AFT.

The observers of the vote count conducted by AAUP-AFT staff included 4 members from our local union and 2 national AFT representatives. The members were: Brian Graf, Harry Janes, Steve Finn, and Kristen Gilmore. The 2 AFT "nat reps" were Darrin Nedrow and Shaun Richman. Darrin Nedrow is transitioning out of his role as our AFT nat rep, and Shaun Richman is the in-coming nat rep assigned to work with us.

The bargaining unit of full-time faculty and teaching/graduate assistants is AFT Local 6323.

The Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) Counselors also voted to continue their AFT affiliation in the same balloting procedure. Although the EOF Counselors bargain their own contract independently with the RU administration, they are also members of AFT Local 6323.

The Part-Time Lecturers Faculty Chapter (PTLFC) are AFT Local 6324. They voted in an independent balloting procedure a month earlier to continue their affiliation with the AFT.

Note: Full-dues paying members of the Rutgers AAUP-AFT are eligible for benefits (beyond those negotiated with RU administration) from AFT. Visit this web page to find out more: http://www.aft.org/aftplus/index.htm
