The following links and documents are supplied as a handy list of benefits information available from University Human Resources and Rutgers AAUP-AFT.
UHR Benefits Staff may be reached at benefits@hr.rutgers.edu or by phone at 732-932-3020, ext. 4077.
Certain benefits are legally subject to negotiations between our union and our employer, guaranteeing employees a voice in the benefits provided.
Health insurance, however, is an important benefit of employment at Rutgers University that is not subject to negotiations between AAUP-AFT and RU administration. Full-time faculty and certain TA/GAs are covered by the New Jersey State Health Benefits Plan. Part-time lecturers are eligible under state law to buy into the New Jersey State Health Benefits Plan. Some additional health care insurance options are now available for PTLs.
Faculty are encouraged to visit UHR's Your Benefits page to find links to State Health Benefits Plan Summaries and the Provider Directory as well as Educational Benefits (Tuition Remission); dental, medical, prescription, and vision care plans; insurance; retirement plans; and Tax Save programs.

NTT faculty are covered by the same contract as other full-time faculty. In general, NTT faculty have rights to medical/dental benefits, pension plans, life insurance, sick leave, vacation if on a calendar year appointment, and tuition remission. These benefits are summarized below.
Medical/Dental
For initial academic year apointments, medical and dental health benefits (with payroll deduction) are covered for the entire year as long as appointment paperwork is completed by October 5 (health benefit is retroactive to Sept. 1). Extra payroll deducations are withheld each June for July and August coverage. Appointments made after October 5 are off-cycle, and enrollment occurs at various dates after the appointment.
For reappointments: Health coverage for NTT positions not reappointed by June 30 ends on August 31. Faculty may take advantage of COBRA for an additional 18 months afer September 1. In some cases, reappointment is not made until August, which means the benefit must be made retroactive.
Pension Plans
Most NTT faculty are in the ABP, although some may be in PERS. For initial appointments, extra deductions will be removed from the first September paycheck to cover the following July and August. However, if the position will not be reappointed, no pension is withheld from pay (no salary or pension benefits after June 30; medical benefits continue until August 31).
Life Insurance
Life insurance follows a schedule similar to that of pension benefits. However, if not reappointed by June 30, insurance is covered only until July 31.
Sick Leave and Vacation
No paid vacation is available for academic year appointments, and faculty on calendar year appointments receive one month vacation as guaranteed under the AAUP-AFT collective agreement. It is up to the department to close ranks when NTT faculty are out on sick leave.
Tuition Remission
NTT personnel are eligible for tuition remission if hired full-time as of the first day of classes. Faculty members are eligible for tuition remission for themselves (graduate or undergraduate credit) only if they are appointed at the rank of associate professor or below. Tuition remission for children (undergraduate) is 100%.
Multi-Year Contracts and other NTT Issues
As contingency has grown, NTT faculty have tackled their issues, working with the University Senate and AAUP-AFT.
In 2007, the University Senate took up a charge and issued a report with recommendations on several key NTT issues, such as multi-year contracts. The Board of Governors approved the granting of multi-year contracts, and President McCormick approved other recommendations not subject to BOG approval. For more information on NTT issues, visit the Rutgers AAUP-AFT NTT Caucus News page.
Collective Bargaining Agreements and Other Documents
Faculty along with teaching and graduate assistants and EOF Counselors are two bargaining units that are represented under the banner of Rutgers AAUP-AFT, AFT Local #6323. Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) Counselors negotiate their own collective bargaining agreement (contract) independently from the full-time faculty and TA/GAs.
EOF Counselors Agreement
Full-time faculty and TA/GA Agreement
TA/GA Guidelines on Pregnancy and Parental Leave
Part-Time Lecturers Faculty Chapter, AAUP-AFT, AFT Local #6324 is an independent bargaining unit that negotiates its own collective bargaining agreement (contract) with RU administration.
PTLFC Agreement
UHR has also agreed to maintain links to the collective bargaining agreements with all the unions representing employees at Rutgers University on the UHR website: http://uhr.rutgers.edu/lr/lragreements.htm
Liaison on Work and Family Issues
The FT/TA-GA 2007-2011 Agreement established the position of Liaison on Work and Family Issues. Lisa Bonick is serving as the Liaison until the end of the 2011 contract. Members are also encouraged to discuss these issues with the union staff at 732-964-1000 or email AAUP-AFT Executive Director, Patrick Nowlan, pnowlan@rutgersaaup.org.
Click here to visit the Work and Family Issues page for more information about the union's efforts to make Rutgers University a more family-friendly place to work.
Also see the Spring 2008 Know Your Contract newsletter that highlighted the Liaison and summarized the three types of family leave that are available under the 2007-2001 Agreement for full-time faculty and TA/GAs.
The union prepared a set of guidelines for Teaching and Graduate Assistants on the pregnancy and parental leave benefits and how these benefits may be accessed by this subset of our members.
