Several changes to health benefits have occurred which affect all State employees. (See helpful links at bottom of page.)
Those changes are:
-
A 1.5% of salary contribution for health benefits (the same 1.5% deduction regardless of type of coverage - employee only, family, etc.)
-
Elimination as of April 1, 2008 of the Traditional Plan for active State employees. Co-premiums for the Traditional Plan are abolished retroactive to July 1, 2007.
-
Employees with health coverage through another person may opt out of the State plan and its 1.5% mandatory contribution.
The State mandated 1.5% salary contribution was never the subject of our negotiations since it was imposed by the State and we negotiate with the University. We did negotiate deferral of this increase until contract settlement was reached and salary increases implemented. Our new agreement links us to the State College AFT contract which will strengthen our ability to resist future curtailments and givebacks in the State health care package.
Below are links with information on the health benefits changes which may answer some of your questions. If after reviewing this information you still have questions, please contact a representative of the AAUP-AFT at aaup@rutgersaaup.org
